In no other city would a tramway be as politically charged as in Jerusalem, where the Light Rail Transit runs along a 14 km route, connecting the Jewish southwest with the Arab east.
The small dramas of life that play out on this tram are captured by Israeli director Amos Gitai in A Tramway in Jerusalem. His heroes are the city’s inhabitants: Jews, Arabs and Christians. The tramway is the common thread that connects them – or not… A philosophical and politically topical film, with the music of clarinettist Louis Sclavis floating over it like a sombre cloud.
