In the 1933 German federal elections, the Nazi Party consolidates its power and unleashes anti-Semitic terror. The Jewish Kemper family flee from Berlin to Zurich and from there to a mountain village in Graubünden. They then have to move on to Paris, before ending up in London. This film adaptation of Judith Kerr’s classic autobiographical children’s book of the same name touchingly and humorously shows, through the eyes of nine-year-old Anna Kemper, how a family is uprooted, how the political situation puts a strain on their private lives, and how the children in particular have to get by in foreign lands. A gentle introduction to the effects of Hitler’s horrific regime, this work by Oscar-winner Caroline Link can also be viewed in reference to the current refugee problem.
