In 1919, Bolshevism, Trotskyism, hardship and rebellion dominate what is today Ukraine. In a small village, Catholic Anton and Jewish Jakob find comfort in their friendship, which is stronger than their religious differences. They create an imaginary world that shields them from fear, violence and injustice. Eventually, Anton’s family flee from Ukraine. For decades afterwards, Anton and Jakob draw strength from the memory of their friendship. Recently deceased, the multi-award-winning director Urushadze has left behind a touching statement against ideological thinking.
