Many films deal with the Holocaust, but few deal with the people who survived the inconceivable. Those Who Remained is one of the exceptions. This film, set in Stalinist Budapest, tells of the friendship between a 16-year-old girl and her gynaecologist. She lost her parents in a concentration camp. He lost his wife and children. A relationship develops between these two hurting individuals, which gives them back what was stolen from them: care and love. Director Barnabás Tóth has accomplished a real feat by making a wonderfully tender film about ‘carrying on afterwards’.
